Accessibility - Accessing SME Professional from Abroad

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Overview

To protect the environment from unauthorised access and reduce exposure to security threats, login attempts from certain international locations are automatically denied. While this restriction limits direct authentication, access to shared documents or external statement links remains unaffected.

Users who expect to work from outside the United Kingdom, or from regions not normally permitted, should prepare before travelling by configuring and testing a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Recommended Actions for Travelling or Remote Users

1. Install a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A VPN should be installed and configured prior to travel to ensure secure and reliable access to the system.

Common VPN providers include:

  • NordVPN

  • ExpressVPN

  • Surfshark

2. Connect to a Trusted VPN Server

A VPN server located in an unrestricted region (for example, the United Kingdom) should be used when logging into the system.

Connecting through a UK‑based server will prevent geographic restrictions from blocking the authentication attempt.

Please note: Foreign IP addresses cannot be added to an allow‑list.

Allow‑listing international IP addresses would bypass existing firewall protections and increase exposure to security risks. For this reason, the security policy prohibits exceptions based on location.
